LEFT:

Brighton Road at the junction of Downs Road, circa 1910.

The California pub can be seen just past the horse and cart.

The shop on the corner was built in approximately 1890.  It was originally called 'South Sutton Stores'.  In 1897 it additionally became the first home of Belmont Post Office.

This and the neighbouring two shops you can see in the photo pre-dated the majority of those over the bridge in Station Road.

Many will remember the corner-shop as Rex's newsagents.  In the 1920s it was a tea rooms, patronised by the day trippers from London who visited the Downs.
